How to make an encrypted backup and restore on a new phone

Local record encryption is optional; exported backups always use a separate password. Before moving phones, export a backup, keep the file and password safe, and verify that the file opens. On the initialized new phone, open it with MedCabin, enter its password and choose what to merge. Export is paid; restoring an existing backup is free.

Fly DesignUpdated

These guides describe the current version. MedCabin for iOS is on the App Store; Android is not yet available. Check the store listing and your installed version for details.

Before you start

  • Export requires an active paid entitlement. Opening, verifying and merging an existing backup do not require one.
  • Choose a suitable place to keep the file, and store the password separately. A cloud drive or sharing app receives the file if you choose that destination.
  • Keep the old phone or existing backup available while checking the new device’s records. Decide what to remove only after that check.

Understand the three different protections

App lock controls access when opening the app. Local data encryption protects records and attachments on the device. A backup password decrypts an exported backup file. Turning on app lock does not mean local data encryption is enabled, and the backup password is not your app-lock password.

To enable local encryption, open privacy and security from settings and turn on data encryption. Exported backups use the separate password you set regardless of whether local encryption is enabled.

Export and keep a backup from the old phone

The export includes what you select at that time. You remain responsible for keeping both the saved file and its password.

  1. Choose the contents

Open backup export from settings and check which information to include. Do not assume that every attachment has been selected.

  2. Set a separate password

Enter and confirm the backup password. Keep it somewhere you can recover later without exposing it together with the file.

  3. Save the encrypted file

Use system sharing to save the backup. Confirm that a file was actually saved, rather than assuming that finishing the export screen was enough.

  4. Verify that it opens

Before clearing the old device, open the saved backup with MedCabin, verify the password and preview the contents. You do not need to import duplicate records back into the old device just to perform this check.

Open and merge on the new phone

Restore verifies the backup password before letting you preview and select records. You do not need to clear the new phone’s existing records first.

  1. Initialize the app

Complete MedCabin’s initial setup on the new device and open it. No cloud account is needed.

  2. Open the backup

Have MedCabin on the new device open the saved file, and enter the password for that file. The system’s file-opening options may differ between platforms.

  3. Preview before saving

Review the received contents in the merge screen, select the items you want and save. Successful decryption is not a substitute for checking the actual contents.

  4. Check records and permissions

Check medicines, members, visits and selected attachments. Notifications and calendars need the new device’s permissions; a successful import does not mean reminders are already enabled.

Restoring an existing backup is free. QR-based phone-to-phone transfer is a separate paid feature; free backup restore does not make every migration method free.

Lost passwords and copies outside the app

Fly Design does not keep your backup password and cannot recover it or decrypt the file for you. Having the file without its password may not be enough to restore it. Verify a backup while the original records are still available, not for the first time after the old phone stops working.

PDFs and items saved in system photos or calendars do not automatically receive the app’s local encryption protection. Check the permissions and retention of copies saved through cloud drives, chats or other apps separately.

  • Cannot open a backup? Check that the file is complete and use the password set when that file was created.
  • No notifications after restore? Check the new phone’s notification and calendar permissions, then review reminder settings.
  • Moving between app stores? Migrating backup data does not transfer paid entitlements between the App Store and Google Play.
